Printed in deep ink-black on textured white paper with beautifully torn deckled edges, The Toad of Love is a bold and story-rich relief print about the particular bravery of offering your heart to someone who might fly away. A stout and magnificently spotted toad perches atop a weathered tree stump, his body carved in sweeping masses of black ink interrupted by a white heart at the center of his chest — unmistakable, unapologetic, worn openly. In his outstretched hand he holds a bouquet of wildflowers, each blossom rendered in detailed, star-shaped cuts that bloom against the dark ink. Perched on a branch just above and to the left, a small bird regards him — present, but uncommitted.

The toad is the soul of this piece. His spotted skin is built from organic white voids carved into the black field, his wide eyes framed in rings of relief line work that give him an expression somewhere between hope and dignified resignation. The tree stump beneath him is a feat of patient carving — dense vertical striations fill the entire form, the grain of the wood alive with rhythmic parallel lines that ground the composition and give it texture and weight. The bouquet is equally considered: tight clusters of carved petals, layered and irregular, the kind of flowers gathered from a field rather than a shop.

The deckled paper edges are original to the print, giving the piece a raw, handmade presence that suits its subject — earnest, a little rough around the edges, entirely sincere. The artist's monogram block stamp in the lower left marks it as one of a kind.
