Printed in deep, velvety ink on crisp white paper, The Hermit is a striking and contemplative relief print that reimagines the ninth card of the tarot through the quiet, inscrutable presence of a cat. Sleek and silhouetted, the figure sits in composed stillness on a narrow ledge, tail curled forward, gaze lifted, a single flower tucked behind one ear like a secret the hermit has decided to keep.

Behind the cat, a great circle hangs suspended, enso-like, drawn with the loose authority of a single stroke, and from it descends a pendant lantern, the hermit's traditional light rendered here not as something held aloft, but as something that simply is, attendant and glowing in its own quiet way. The circle becomes halo, becomes moon, becomes the inner world the hermit carries everywhere.

To the left, a small potted cactus stands in quiet companionship, spiky, self-sufficient, thriving in solitude. It is the hermit's only companion, and somehow that feels exactly right.

The hand-carved quality of the work is inseparable from its meaning. The bold, gestural cuts that form the cat's silhouette give the figure weight and presence, while the fine white lines reserved within, the curve of the chest, the tuck of the haunch, breathe life into the darkness. The circle behind is neither perfectly round nor perfectly rough; it holds tension the way a held breath does. A stamped monogram block in gold in the lower left corner marks the piece with quiet confidence, a warm note anchoring the composition's cool, meditative stillness.

A piece for those who find wisdom in withdrawal, and light enough in a single lantern.
